With the new global economy experiencing an all time high in terms of travel for both leisure and business, access to wireless broadband connectivity on the move has become not just critical but basic.

Additionally, given that most laptops that are being shipped across the globe are Wi-Fi pre enabled and a growing number of consumer electronics devices like PDAs & PDA/Phones, Dual-Mode (Cellular/WiFi), Portable Gaming Devices, Cameras, MP3/Media Players etc. are coming in-built with wireless the wireless broadband connectivity on the move is finding a larger audience.

The earliest form of wireless broadband that became globally popular was Wi-Fi (802.11x), and WBA started with a key focus on the enhancing collaboration amongst its member operators in the Wi-Fi roaming arena. Founded in 2003, WBA consists of visionary fixed and mobile operators having a strong focus on wireless broadband deployment and strategy.

WBA was formed to develop a common commercial, technical and marketing framework for wireless broadband technologies and drive its adoption worldwide.

WBA’s goal is to develop a global alliance of wireless providers who can deliver reliable and trustworthy wireless services and enhance the user experience for wireless broadband users, increase awareness and help on increasing usage of Wireless Broadband roaming at various locations

To facilitate commercial roaming implementations between member operators, the alliance has developed WRIX (Wireless Roaming Intermediary eXchange), a modularised standard service specification that won the Wireless Broadband Innovation 2007 award in the Best Wi-Fi Product / Service segment.

WBA members and partner network collectively today offers coverage across 28 key markets worldwide catering close to 350 million mobile/telephone and 30 million broadband subscribers at over 100,000 hotspots.
